Equitable Relief Extended for some Connector Members until September 2019

October 17, 2018

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is offering assistance to Medicare beneficiaries currently enrolled in Medicare Part A and coverage through the individual market health insurance Exchange (also referred to as the Marketplace). The Health Connector is the Marketplace for individuals or families in Massachusetts.

This Equitable Relief assistance provides eligible individuals with an opportunity to enroll in Medicare Part B without incurring penalties that would otherwise apply.

Further, CMS is offering assistance to eligible individuals who were dually enrolled in Medicare Part A and the Exchange (the Massachusetts Health Connector) and subsequently enrolled in Part B with a penalty. This assistance provides these individuals an opportunity to request a reduction in their Part B late enrollment penalty. To learn more, refer to the Fact sheet.

For help to apply, call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 or go to www.ssa.gov to find your local office. Ask for assistance to apply for "Equitable Relief".

If the line staff are unfamiliar with the Equitable Relief program, ask to speak with a manager.

Note:  This assistance does not apply to individuals enrolled through a small business health options Exchange through their employer (also referred to as SHOP). In Massachusetts, those individuals enrolled in a Health Connector for Business plan would not be eligible for this assistance.
