Free Help with Tax Preparation

February 10, 2021

There are free, virtual and local opportunities for consumers who need help filing their taxes. Some of the available resources include:

  • The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $57,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English-speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.

  • The Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program offers free tax help for all taxpayers, particularly those who are 60 years of age and older, specializing in questions about pensions and retirement-related issues unique to seniors. The IRS-certified volunteers who provide tax counseling are often retired individuals associated with non-profit organizations that receive grants from the IRS.

  • AARP Foundation Tax-Aide offers free tax help to anyone especially for those age 50 and older who can't afford a tax preparation service. IRS-certified volunteers understand that retirement or other life changes may make tax filing a little more complicated. AARP membership is not required

  • Many of the 23 Community Action Agencies - local trusted institutions mandated to fight poverty - throughout Massachusetts offer free tax preparation services as well as many other critical integrated services including fuel assistance, food, early education and care including Head Start, and homelessness prevention including rental support and affordable housing that support economic stability, mobility, and health. • Boston Tax Help Coalition is offering virtual tax preparation. There are free resources available to file your taxes from home, or with scheduled drop-off assistance, during the COVID-19 pandemic. If someone does not have access to a computer or smartphone, they can still get telephone support related to tax filing. They can dial 3-1-1 or 617-635-4500. Due to COVID-19, it is recommended to call ahead to schedule appointments and learn about any new safety protocols related to dropping off documents.
