MassHealth and COVID-19 Update: Retroactive Eligibility (Up to 90 Days) for Members Under the Age of 65

We are reaching out to provide important updates about our response to 2019 Novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19). We thank you for the support you provide individuals to obtain and maintain health coverage especially during this difficult time. 

Retroactive Eligibility (Up to 90 Days) for Members Under the Age of 65

MassHealth members who applied on or after March 1, 2020 can request that their start date be retroactive up to 90 days. Eligibility may be requested as early as the first day of the third calendar month before the month of application, but no earlier than March 1, 2020. Important to note, retroactive eligibility does not apply to MassHealth health plan enrollment.

How to Request Retroactive Eligibility (up to 90 days)

MassHealth members can request up to 90 day retroactive eligibility either by:

  • Contacting MassHealth and speaking with our Customer Service representative at (800) 841-2900 TTY: (800) 497-4648; or
  • Submitting a written request to MassHealth. Written requests should include a member's name, date, signature, and social security number or MassHealth ID number and indicate this is a MAGI Retroactive Eligibility request with the requested retroactive start date, or the number of retroactive eligibility days they are requesting.
    • Document Upload through Members under the age of 65 and have an existing account may upload retroactive eligibility requests by using the document upload feature. Documents should be uploaded using the dropdown option: MassHealth - Self-Attestation Form (SAF-CVD) and Retro Eligibility Request

Upon request, MassHealth will provide retroactive eligibility for the member in their current MassHealth benefit.
